Some cancer survivors in the Sefwi Akontombra district in the Western Region have shared their stories on how they survived the disease saying early detection saved them.
Two survivors in the area gave their testimonies when non-governmental organization, Breast Care International (BCI) organized a breast cancer education at the Sehwi Asafo Catholic Parish Hall last Saturday.
The two survivors, themselves natives of the area, joined energetic Raheema, also a survivor, on the podium to assure the women that breast cancer is curable and survivable if suspicious lumps are reported on time for treatment.
The healthy looking survivors encouraged the women to disabuse their minds of wrongly held notions about the disease being caused by witchcraft among other superstitious beliefs.
Hundreds of enthusiastic, health-conscious women thronged the Parish hall to take advantage of the education programme which was climaxed with a cancer screening exercise.
A comprehensive, motivational and educational talk was given by BCI President Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, who reiterated her desire to sustain the breast cancer education programme in rural areas where ignorance and poverty have conspired to deny many, the right to proper medical care.
Traditional authorities of the town commended Breast Care International for sustaining the rural education campaign and promised to support subsequent programs in whatever way possible.
