The Minister for Interior, Douglas Prosper Bani has assured the safety of Ghanaians ahead of the 2016 general election.
He made the assurance on Saturday during the destruction of thousands of confiscated small arms and light weapons in Accra.
According to him, small arms and light weapons have fuelled conflicts in countries which have resulted to millions losing their lives.
Speaking at a program to observe the United Nations day of weapons in Accra, Prosper Bani charged individuals with unlicensed weapons to register immediately.
“Today many Ghanaians will be safer, many businesses and homes in Ghana will be spared from potential armed robberies and violence by the use of weapons. Many homes will be spared from potential break-ins. All these are the result of the removal from our society and the destruction of thousands of illegal small arms which marks the United Nations weapons destruction day.”
“This small arms destruction programme is a symbolic demonstration by the government and all state actors today to contribute to the reduction of the circulation of illicit weapons in our society. Even though Ghana has not experienced any major election conflict since the return to multiparty democracy, we cannot be complacent neither can we take our eyes off the ball,” he added.
