Until just about three months ago, South Africa was Africa’s biggest economy. But now it appears the former apartheid country is losing  many of its enviable attributes.

Lately, the economy has seen massive decline, as experts say latest figures showed a shrinking economy.

Latest to join the streak of falls form grace in the country’s development statistics is the country’s educational standards.

According to the Global Information Technology Report 2014 compiled by the World Economic Forum, South Africa is ranked almost last among the 148 countries monitored in global competitiveness in the area of Maths and Science.

The report provides an assessment of networked readiness, or how prepared an economy is to apply the benefits of information and communications technologies (ICTs) to promote national economic growth and well-being.

According to the report, South Africa’s education system in general is of very poor quality ranked at 146 out of 148; Nigeria was 133rd and Ghana came first in Africa, but 46th in the world.

The report further noted that the national strategy for Maths and Science was out of date, the shortage of qualified teachers, and curriculum changes over the last ten years have negatively impacted teaching.
