Hohoe Presby School has emerged winner of a maiden reading and spelling competition by Pencils of Promise held in Ho, the Volta regional capital.
The literacy programme organized by the Non-Governmental Organization for primary children in the region is aimed at promoting the proper and effective use of the English Language as well improving the reading ability of the pupils.
Upper primary pupils representing the various schools drawn from deprived areas across the region were drilled at different stages of the competition.
Out of the twelve schools from the preliminary stages of the competition, Hohoe Presby, Adaklu Hilhave and Saviefe Deme made it to the final stage.
Although keenly contested, the competition saw Hohoe Presby taking a commanding lead in the three round tests which included dictation, word search, and reading.
For their prize, Hohoe Presby received certificates of participation, school supplies for one academic year, a trophy, set of jersey with football and a cash of GHc500.
The first runner up, Adaklu Hlihave D/A also went home with school supplies, certificates of participation and a cash of GHc300. Saviefe Deme D/A which emerged second runner up went home with school supplies and a cash of GHc200.
The cash prizes which were provided by the members of parliament of Adaklu and Ho West Constituencies, Kwame Agbodza and Emmanuel Bedzrah respectively were to serve as seed capital for the school to organize such competitions periodically in the schools .
Pencils of Promise, is a non-profit organization that builds schools and increases educational opportunities in the developing world.
