Nike withdraw Wimbledon dresses after complaints they are too ‘revealing’

Sportswear giant Nike are recalling the tennis dresses which are due to be used by female players at Wimbledon – over fears they are too skimpy.

Complaints were raised about the amount of flesh shown by the design of this year’s costumes.

The manufacturers have asked for all of their representatives – believed to be about 20 in the main women’s competition – to send back their outfits for alterations.

Players were reportedly claiming that the ‘Nike Premier Slam’ dress, which is worth £75, rises above the waistline and becomes uncomfortable during play.

An email sent to players was seen by the Daily Mail and apparently read: “We need to make a small change to your dresses per Wimbledon rules. Could you please bring them by the Nike Wimbledon House.”

It added underneath that “this is VERY important.”

Players were forced to make emergency adjustments to their outfits during the qualifying event in Roehampton this week.

GB hopeful Katie Boulter, 19, wore an improvised belt made from a hairband in order to keep her dress in place.

This year’s Wimbledon Championships start on Monday.

Wimbledon has a strict all-white dress code which states that ‘common standards of decency are required at all times’.
