The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim in the Eastern Region, who also doubles as the National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary nominee for the area has resigned as parliamentary nominee.

This means the MP, Joseph Sam Amankwanor who won the NDC parliamentary primary in November 2015 will not be contesting in the November polls.

Confirming the latest development to Citi News, the Deputy Eastern Regional Secretary of the NDC, Francis Annor Dompreh indicated that the MP’s decision to step down was on personal reasons.

“Yes indeed, the man has actually written to the National Executives and copied the regional and the constituency executives. The man has not resigned as a sitting MP, he has only withdrawn his candidature for the upcoming for the upcoming 2016 election based on personal reasons.”

Annor Dompreh said the MP in his letter “stated personal reasons for his decision hence will not be able to contest the 2016 election.”

The party also hinted to Citi News that the NDC will today [Thursday] open nominations for a new candidate to replace him.

“The party will officially open nomination for primaries in the area and for those who are interested to pick their forms and contest. If your nominee has indicated to you that he can no longer contest,  you need to fill that vacancy so we need to have a candidate for the 2016 election. So the party will officially on Thursday open nominations,” he added.
