Members of Parliament have been admonished to shun the partisanship that characterizes their discourse in order to push the country’s development agenda forward.
With Britain’s European Union (EU) referendum coming off today [Thursday], the MP for Subin Constituency, Isaac Osei, has urged his colleagues to take principled stance on issues of national development irrespective of their political affiliation as MPs in Britain have done.
The UK public are being asked to choose whether the UK should stay in the European Union or leave in the first vote on the UK’s links with Europe for more than 40 years.
Drawing lessons from the rhetoric surrounding the build-up to the referendum, Mr. Osei noted that “100 conservative MPs have chosen not to support David Cameron [a conservative Prime Minster’s] campaign.”
“Can you imagine Honourable Alban Bagbin, the leader of this august House, taking a public stance on a major issue contrary to that of the President? We do not have that culture or practice in this country,” he stated further as he highlighted the fact that, MPs rarely disagree with a sitting President from their party.
He also stated that political parties should also strive to create an environment that allowed objective and dispassionate views on issues of national interest.
“Perhaps all parties should relax their whips and permit members to freely state their position on the basis of their conscience and beliefs.”
