The Auditor General has uncovered the use of unaccounted cash to the tune of GHc 1.5 million by a cashier of the Ghana Railway Company limited.
This was revealed at the sitting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday.
The acting Managing Director of the company, John Essel, recounted that “there was cash that was supposed to have been bound, however, the cashier failed to put them at the bank.”
“As a result of that, the Economic and Organized Crime unit was invited to investigate this issue” but attempts by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to retrieve the money have so far yielded no results, according to Mr. Essel.
“This issue has been going on for quite a long time. We have made several follow ups with the Economic and Organized Crime unit so that we could get the outcome of the report which has not been forthcoming,” Mr. Essel explained.
The PAC has thus requested the presence of EOCO to brief them on how far they have gone with the recovery of the said funds.
The Ghana Railway Company has been struggling for years, due to the lack of the needed investment to resuscitate the once vibrant transport sector.
