Ahead of the general elections in November, the Nanumba North District Election Security Taskforce, inaugurated in April this year, has met with stakeholders in the district, to deliberate on ways to ensure that peace prevails in the area before, during and after the general elections.
Addressing the meeting, the Chairman of the Election Security Taskforce, who doubles as the District Police Commander, DSP Ben Aniyah, urged political parties and other stakeholders to be law abiding.
“I must emphasize here that, section 28 of the political parties Act , 2000 (574), has provided that a political party that intends to hold public meeting shall comply with the provisions of the holding of a special event as provided under the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491). The penalty in the case of any breach is a fine of not less than Ghc1,000 or a term not more than two years or both. I therefore entreat all political parties to try as much as possible to abide by the rules.”
He also reminded the traditional authorities of Section 26 Act 574, which provides that a chief or public officer shall not engage in canvassing support or against a political party or candidate standing for a public election.
He therefore appealed to them to desist from such practices.
He cautioned especially the political parties of the establishment of vigilante groups, saying his outfit will not countenance such groups in the district.
