Sagnarigu based Alhassan Gbanzaba Memorial School remains the best performing basic school in the Northern Region on the league table of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The school which was established in 1968 as a private school by Mrs. Jane Alhassan has since 2007 produced the best BECE results in the Northern Region.
Mrs. Jane Alhassan in a Citi News interview ahead of the school’s 16th Speech and Prize Giving Day scheduled for Saturday 25 June attributed the school’s success to management’s strict monitoring and supervision of teachers coupled with students’ discipline.
She revealed that the school was first established with her savings in the garage of their private residence at Sagnarigu.
She is happy that it currently has a student population of 465 and over 50 teaching and non-teaching staff.
According to the 78 years old widow, each classroom from kindergarten to the Junior High School level has a minimum of 21 and a maximum of 35 students.
She narrated her mission statement saying, “Education is the key to progress as with the acquisition of knowledge, the health and nutrition of the community improves, subsequently productivity increases and the quality of life is enhanced.”
She eulogized her late husband Alhaji Rowland Issifu Alhassan (the first lawyer from Northern Ghana in 1961) for his contribution to the school’s success.
Among other challenges, she said the school lacked a befitting Science Laboratory and administration block.
Mrs. Jane Alhassan thereby implored the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to assist management expand the facilities there.
She also called for enough funds to boost the scholarship scheme meant for the upkeep of needy students on enrolment.
School profile
Established as a Kindergarten in 1968, the school was named after the late Edmund Alhassan alias Gbanzaba who emerged as the first university graduate from the three regions of the north.
She narrated that some concerned parents encouraged her to establish a primary school and eventually a Junior High School in 2004.
Mrs. Janet Alhassan’s insists her objective is to produce confident and competent future leaders.
