The coalition of Unpaid Teachers has kicked against government’s intention to pay them four months of their accrued salaries instead of the multiple years that they have worked without pay.
It has questioned the reasoning behind government’s decision and queried why in some instances, three years of accrued salaries will be forfeited.
In an interview with Citi News, the General Secretary of the group, Isaac Amponsah, noted that they had sighted a directive to all regional directors of education which indicated that they will finally be paid monies, but only covering four months.
Mr. Amponsah called the development unfair and accused the authorities of short-changing the unpaid teachers.
“We thinks it is unfair… Seriously, there is something wrong somewhere that we think authorities ought to go back and do something about this issue,” he said.
He further called on government to reconsider its decision.
“We just want authorities to think about this decision they have taken and do something for us because it is not fair.”
No support from NAGRAT, GNAT
The coalition earlier chided the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), of turning a blind eye to their plight.
Mr. Amponsah explained that, the lack of support from the teacher unions was limiting their bargaining power as the government generally expects the unions to deal with their concerns.
“When we engaged authorities, they also told us the rest is left for the teacher unions to deal with our issue and if it has to come to any bargaining, we don’t have that bargaining certificate or the authority to do that so they cannot engage us anymore.”
