The Ghana Union of Professional Students (GNUPS), is asking government to clarify its stance on absorbing utility cost for the various tertiary institutions across the country.
Last year, government announced a policy to absorb utility bills for tertiary institutions, but reports indicate that some of the institutions transfer the cost to students.
Students in some of the tertiary institutions say the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), is still billing them despite government’s intervention.
They claim they have so far received bills totaling Ghc200 from the PURC.
Speaking to Citi News, the President of GNUPS, Elorm Mawuli Kwawu, called on government to come clear on the issue.
“We have been receiving some concerns from students with regards to the bill that we have been given ahead of next semester. I can say that there are some agitations that are looming already. What we have told the students is to remain calm, patient and resolute because we are committed to resolving these issues.”
“We are expecting government to come out immediately to state their stance clearly. That is our problem. You cannot say you will bear the cost, then on the other hand, these heads of institutions are charging the student. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) keeps harassing them and they cannot close down the school. Probably, the students may want to demonstrate which we do not want, or may want to go to the court because we have every right to file a motion to halt the issuance of those utility charges to the students.
