Suspended General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has withdrawn as a witness for Paul Afoko, the party’s suspended National Chairman, who is challenging his suspension in court.
According to Citi News’ Fred Djabanor, the announcement was made known in court today [Thursday], by lawyers of Mr. Afoko, who did not give any reasons for his action.
Kwabena Agyepong was expected to testify today [Thursday], to back Mr. Afoko’s claims that that he was wrongfully suspended from the party.
[contextly_sidebar id=”FVFGfnm1FgTzDj4QoVtQKXu1tFzttWi6″] This comes barely two weeks after an Accra High Court dismissed a suit by the second National Vice Chairman of the party, Sammy Crabbe, who is also challenging his suspension from the party.
According to the judge, Justice Sir Dennis Adjei, the national disciplinary committee of the NPP has jurisdiction to hear and punish anyone who had been found to have breached some rules of the party.
Mr. Afoko testified on behalf of Mr. Crabbe, after questions were raised by Sammy Crabbe’s lawyers about the capacity of one of the disciplinary committee members, Gifty Kusi. Sammy Crabbe dragged the NPP to court months after his suspension by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC), citing violation of the rules of natural justice, error on the face of the records and a breach of procedure.
Mr. Crabbe was suspended indefinitely in 2015, alongside the party’s General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.
The suspension of the two came shortly after the suspension of the National Chairman, Paul Afoko.
They were suspended for “misconduct” which included a disregard for party structures. Mr. Agyepoing unlike the two, did not seek a legal action, but appeared to have supported the action by the duo viewed as his allies.
Mr. Agyapong in May this year, made a rather rare appearance in court in solidarity with suspended Chairman Paul Afoko, who was then testifying in the suit filed by Sammy Crabbe.
It is thus unclear why he has suddenly refused to appear as witness for Mr. Paul Afoko.
