The Electoral Commission (EC) has set July 19, 2016, for the Abetifi Constituency by-election in the Eastern Region, following the death of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for the area, Peter Wiafe Pepera.
The EC says the by-election is in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution.
[contextly_sidebar id=”B337UW9p5MFQShdSHyQ5IFWCFCySyMo8″]A statement issued by Alhaji Amadu Sulley, EC’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, announced that nominations for the election will be taken on Tuesday June 21 and June 22, at the District Office of the Commission at Abetifi from 9:00am to 12:00 noon and 2:00pm to 5:00pm both days.
Nomination forms, according to the statement, may be obtained from the District Office or the Regional Office of the Commission in Koforidua.
“Candidates for the election shall provide two recent photographs (bust) with red background, showing the full face and both ears,” the statement said.
It said the filing fee for the election is GHC1,000.00, asking all political parties to take note and be guided accordingly.
Death of Peter Pepera
The MP for the Abetifi Constituency Wiafe Pepera, died on May 21 at the 37 Military Hospital where he was on admission.
The late lawmaker who died a fortnight after his 62nd birthday, was once a minister in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration before joining the NPP in 2001.
He was a Ranking Member on the Trade and Industry Committee in Parliament.
