The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is urging squatters and residents along the major drains and flood prone zones to vacate such areas.
This follows NADMO’s ongoing assessment exercise ahead of distribution of relief items to victims of the recent Accra floods.
[contextly_sidebar id=”M2y1lL1n3Od2qpjDUvptzxvUFr48jeKR”]The Public Relations Officer of NADMO, Kweku De-Graft, speaking to Citi News, revealed that the assessment and the de-silting of drains, have been going on since Friday.
According to him, “we did an assessment tour of some areas particularly Circle and Odawna. De-silting is still ongoing and clearing of the drains is still ongoing.”
In Mr. De-Graft’s view, the incidents of flooding are “mainly due to human attitudes,” hence the warning to people living around low lying areas to vacate such places.
Following the floods, he maintained that NADMO was doing its part by clearing drains and sensitizing residents.
“We are asking people to move away from the low lying areas. We ask them to move away to get the drains cleared so we are doing our part. We are doing our prevention, and we are doing our sensitization.”
Flooding in Accra
Several parts of Accra were submerged in flood waters following hours of heavy rain last week, on Thursday especially.
The floods submerged homes and properties in the capital city.
Areas prone to flooding like the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Kaneshie, Adabraka, and Awoshie were some of the worst affected areas.
