A security post under construction at the Okponglo entrance of the University of Ghana has been demolished by some unknown persons.

This is the second time the structure has been pulled down after the former National Security Coordinator, LT. Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey ordered his security operatives to pull down the structure which was to serve as a toll booth and a security post.

The authorities at the University of Ghana and the National Security Council have been battling over the effect the re-construction of the structure will have on the traffic situation on the main Madina-Tetteh Quarshie road.

The National Security Council in a statement indicated it had ordered the school authorities to halt the reconstruction of the security post and demanded an environmental assessment report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

But the university in response denied receiving any such directive from the National Security and clarified that the structure is not a toll booth as it is being widely reported in the media.

A student journalist with the UG campus based radio station, Radio Universe; Abdul Karim Ibrahim confirmed the destruction of the structure to Citi News.

According to him, the security personnel on campus are unable to confirm whether it was National Security operatives who undertook the demolishing exercise.

The campus security recounted how the incident occurred saying, “two bulldozers came along with four drivers and some Policemen in uniform escorting them as well.”

The security men were reportedly not to contact their head of security.

“While some of them [Policemen] were with the security men in their office, there were others who moved ahead and did the demolishing…but those who did the demolishing were not in uniform,” Karim said.

The security operatives were reportedly in the company “of some big men who were in four-wheel drives. They tell me the demolishing was done around 11:30pm last night [Monday].”
