The chairman of the Commission investigating past judgment debts payments in Ghana, Justice Yaw Appau is questioning the basis for the existence of several government accounts at the Bank of Ghana.

This follows revelations by the Deputy Assistant Director at the Banking Department of the Central Bank,  Leslie Akron,  that there  exists over one hundred government  accounts in the Bank.

Speaking  at Monday’s  sitting  of the Commission  Justice  Yaw Appau  lamented the existence of the accounts saying it could  create room  for  people  to carry out unauthorized  transactions .

Justice Yaw Appau asked, “how many accounts does the government hold in the Bank of Ghana?”

Responding to Justice Appau’s question, Mr. Akron said: “There are more than one hundred of them. We open and close as the situation demands”.

The respected Appeals Court Judge questioned why there should be several accounts at the Bank saying, “sometimes, we don’t even understand, like the Special Judgment Debt Account.  Some monies are paid through it (Special Judgment Debt Account) which are not even classified as judgment debt payments. Meanwhile  you had  earlier told us  that there is no  account  at the Central  Bank  designated  as  a  Special  judgment debt  account”.

The Attorney General (AG)

The  Attorney General (AG)  was  also subpoenaed  to  provide  a list of  individuals  and institutions  that  had  made claims  against  the  AG  for services  rendered and monies not paid.

A Chief  State  Attorney  at  the AG’s Department,  Dorothy Afriyie Ansah who represented  the AG failed  to provide the list  and  requested  for more time  to allow  the office compile it.
