A Deputy General Secretary of the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has descended heavily on the Finance Minister, Seth Terkper, for his handling of tax proposals, particularly the suggestion that pension  contributions and allowances were going to start attracting taxes.

Media reports had indicated that government was planning to tax part of pension contributions per comments attributed to the Finance Minister who spoke at a business summit.

[contextly_sidebar id=”9ZZ5K91nwRpm44I5ubL7Cal3AHEtvwWJ”]The Ministry of Finance has however explained its stance on the issue of taxation of pensions saying the submission made by Seth Terkper on the Income Tax Act, 2015 (Act 896) at a forum on Tuesday had been misinterpreted.

NDC members angry at Terkper

According to a visibly angry Mr. Ayndoho who was speaking to Accra-based Muntie FM, he has had to calm some members of the NDC who have been infuriated by Mr. Terkper’s comments.

Speaking to Muntie FM, the Deputy General Secretary said, “The NDC party will not sit down again… No individual minister will walk us into opposition. No individual minister will walk us into opposition, it will not happen, it cannot happen!”

Mr. Anyidoho lamented the current tax regime which he said was overburdening Ghanaians and threatening to overshadow the good work of the governing NDC.

“Who would appreciate your good works when taxes drown the people, Why? It will not continue and cannot continue.”

Mr. Ayindoho also asserted that it did not make sense to tax pension contributions whilst stressing that the NDC would not stand aside for any political appointee like Mr. Tekper to derail the party’s efforts with unpopular decisions.

“Seth Terkper, please watch your language. The NDC does not belong to you, it does not belong to me, and it belongs to the grassroots. Seth Terkper do not incur the wrath of the party,” he warned.
