The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is taking steps to ensure that illegal mining in the River Annu and its tributaries are stopped.

The activities of the illegal miners in the river and its tributaries have diverted the water, forcing GWCL to shut down the Konongo Water Treatment plant.

Due to these activities, the company has also been unable to put its new water treatment plant to good use.

In an interview with Citi News, the Director of Communications for the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Stanley Martey, said that the company has met with stakeholders in the area on that issue.

[contextly_sidebar id=”NrZIG2s1gfFZEAeWHxA2n3IL7agkonmp”] “We met with the Municipal Security Council, including chiefs of the area. All parties involved pledged that they were going to play their roles effectively so that these illegal activities could stop. There are going to be one or two more meetings then there will be a swoop into the area,” he said.

Mr. Martey added that the stakeholders had already met and given the illegal miners time to stop their activities and move from the area.

“Prior to that, we received the information that the municipal security council had already met and given the chiefs and the illegal miners that by the end of this month, the activities. They’ve been given some grace period to evacuate from that area.”
