The Administrator of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Mr. Kwabena Akyeampong has told Citi Business News that government is equipping the security services with electronic gadgets to help fight cyber crimes.
Cyber crimes such SIM BOX fraud and hacking have become rampant in recent times.
A recent collaboration between the Police CID and Subah Info Solutions led to five separate arrests.
The operation also saved the country about 77 million dollars.
Speaking to Citi Business News at the 10th celebration of GIFEC, Mr. Kwabena Akyeampong stated that the scheme dubbed “Security Services Connectivity Project” is targeted at reducing cyber crimes as it helps transform inmates through education.
“We have a programme with the security services to equip them in their duties. Basically all the security services including the military, prisons, police and BNI have all received equipment from government to help fight cyber crime,” he said.
He stated that the supply of the equipment has led to some positive results with the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) as it clamps down on SIM BOX fraud.
“The impact is felt on how these equipment we have provided them is helping to reduce crime. These institutions are really doing their best and they require all the support to fight ICT related crimes,” he said.
Touching on how the programme has been extended to inmates of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mr. Akyeampong stated that prisoners in the country are given an opportunity to learn ICT while they serve their term.
“We have given them many equipment such that they have equipment to teach the prisoners ICT. We believe that this is one way to transform these people who find themselves in prison to help them develop ICT skills before they come out,” he said.
He stated that the programme has also been extended to some senior high schools in the country.
