Footballer John Paintsil, has been arrested by the Police for allegedly slapping the East Legon District Police Commander, DSP Emmanuel Basintale.

The footballer is being accused of slapping the commander in the right eye yesterday [Tuesday] around 5pm following an order for his arrest.

Confirming the information to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, ASP Effia Tenge, said John Paintill’s wife had lodged a complaint against him for allegedly stealing her car.

The Police invited him for interrogation but he refused to cooperate.

“When both parties were invited by the police for interrogation, we realized John Paintsil was not ready to cooperate and in the course of interrogation became very furious and decided to leave the meeting. It was at this point that the District Commander instructed that he should be arrested and a statement taken from him. Because he was not satisfied with that he assaulted the district commander. He hit him in the right eye and also pushed the investigator. So it took some few police personnel to get him arrested” she stated.

According to ASP Tenge, the Police Commander is receiving medical treatment.

She added that the police are still investigating the matter.

John Paintsil, who has earned callup to play for the Black Stars, has seen his career taking a bit of a nosedive.

John Paintsil allegedly beat his wife in 2013

In 2013, he was in the news for the wrong reasons, after he reportedly battered his wife, Richlove Paintsil, which ended him in police custody.

After that incident which was widely publicized, the then Ghana defender revealed that the story about him stabbing his wife in the eye cost him his football career.

The 30-year-old, who was still searching for a new club at the time after leaving Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv, said he struggled to secure a new club.

Football career

The former Ghana international in July 2014, joined Maritzburg United in South Africa on a two-year deal after his contract with Santos expired.

The 30-year-old was a free agent after parting ways with The People’s Team following their failure to gain promotion to the Premier Soccer League at the end of last season.

However, while his stint with the Cape Town outfit may not have ended with the success that either party desired, it has convinced the midfielder to stay in South Africa, with Maritzburg his next destination.

Paintsil has played in England for teams like Westham, Fulham and Leicester City, the recent winners of the English Premier League.
