A former National Youth Organizer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan, has indicated that he will be filing for contempt charges against the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, and the other members of the Electoral Commission.
This follows the EC’s official response on the Supreme Court ruling that described the nation’s electoral register as “reasonably inaccurate”.
[contextly_sidebar id=”uVsf5Dj8mP0BQPikhc1VjUxVfyYYkdg0″]The EC explained that the recent Supreme Court ruling on the voters’ register did not instruct them to delete the names of those who registered ahead of the 2012 elections with the National Health Insurance card as a proof of identity.
But Abu Ramadan is of the view that the EC has interpreted the ruling wrongly and are thus in contempt of court.
According to the EC’s representation, such names could only be removed using the already existing processes used for expunging ineligible names.
But per Mr. Ramadan’s interpretation of the Apex Court’s ruling, the actions of the EC amount to high crime and contempt.
“In terms of a constitutional matter, the refusal to interpret the orders of the court amounts to high crime and for that matter that amounts to criminal conscription against people who fall in contempt or decide not to implement the ruling,” he explained.
It is this light that he had directed his lawyers to file contempt charges against officials of the EC.
“I have told my lawyers to proceed and file contempt charges against all seven officials of the electoral commission. We are going to drag all the seven to court in contempt of court for refusal to implement the orders of the court.”
