Some civil society organisations have asked the Ministry of Health to facilitate the passage of the Legislative Instrument (LI) on tobacco law.
They argue that the delay in the process for the adoption of the LI is hampering the effective implementation of the prohibition of tobacco smoking in public places.
The Programmes Manager of one the civil society organisations , Vision for Alternative Development, Labran Musah, said smoking in public places cannot be checked if the LI is not passed.
“People do not see the essence of tobacco because we have malaria and other issues that are disturbing us. We have been following up on this issue but the Ministry of Health keeps telling us it is working on it but for how long will it work on it?”
The Tobacco Control Measures is Part Six of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which was passed by Parliament.
However, four years down the line, the LI to operationalize the tobacco measures is yet to be realized. Mr. Musah also believes the passage of the LI will help strengthen the sensitization on the dangers of tobacco use.
