Lawyers for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), today [Tuesday] sought to justify the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko in court, saying, Mr. Afoko deliberately frustrated the internal process to tackle petitions brought against him.
The lawyers, who made this known during a cross examination of Mr. Afoko in the case, argued that the embattled Chairman deliberately submitted to the National Council a list of members for the party’s disciplinary committee, with only one woman despite the constitutional requirement of two women.
Afoko is challenging his suspension in court.
[contextly_sidebar id=”jJoginWfuFUlsxE6taeNV0I2qRtm7fL4″]But Mr. Afoko denied the accusation in court, insisting that the decision on the formation of the disciplinary committee was not solely taken by him but collectively with the national council.
Paul Afoko in 2015 filed the suit challenging his suspension as National Chairman of the NPP.
In his suit, he argues that the action and processes leading to his suspension by some elements of the party were unconstitutional and a breach of natural justice.
Mr. Afoko also raised issues with the capacity of one member of the disciplinary committee Gifty Kusi, who was part of the decision to suspend him.
Why Afoko sued NPP
The NPP’s National Executive Committee suspended Paul Afoko in October 2015 for “misconduct.”
The decision was adopted by the party’s National Council, which is the second highest decision making body of the party after congress.
Mr. Afoko rejected the reasons for his suspension and subsequently sued the party for taking such an action against him.
After Mr. Afoko’s suspension, the General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyepong, and a 2nd National Vice Chairman, Sammy Crabbe, who are his allies, were also suspended.
