The Electoral commission (EC) says it will go ahead with the voter registration exercise despite urgent calls by some groups for a postponement.
The People’s National Congress (PNC) and the Danquah Institute (DI) have both asked the EC to call off its planned registration until certain key concerns are addressed.
The Danquah Institute on Thursday cited incidents of double registration as being one of the key reasons which resulted in the Election Petition case and therefore advised the Commission to conduct an audit of the voters register before adding new names.
The PNC has also given the EC a two-week ultimatum to audit the voters register as well as a meeting with all political parties before the exercise is conducted.
They further threatened to take legal action against the Commssion if their demands are not met.
But in an interview on Eyewitness News, The principal Public Relations Officer [P.R.O] of the Electoral Commission[EC], Silvia Annor noted that“if there are any concerns regarding the registeration exercise, then of course it will have to be communicated officially to the Electoral Commission, then the commission will react appropriately”
Mrs. Annor also disclosed that “the Electoral Commission has been doing some consultations with our stakeholders, particularly the political parties, the media, “if you will recollect, we had a consensus forum with them and it is all part of the reform that we are going through. The Electoral Commission opened the door to all political parties to bring ideas aboard to make sure that they do some kind of cross analysis to aid it in making proposals aimed at reforming electoral processes or even the laws and the political parties obliged and they brought in their proposals.”
