Individual brilliance and good sportsmanship characterized this year’s Nana Awuah Darko-Apem Memorial Squash championship at the Accra Polo Club on Saturday.
Themed ‘Healthy mind in healthy body’, the well-attended competition drew staff of the Vanguard Group who battled for supremacy in other disciplines like draught, Ludo apart from the squash competition.
Held in memory of Nana Awuah-Darko Ampem I, former chairman of Ghana Squash Association, it was the Accra Polo Club squash team that triumphed over Cocobod in the fiercely contested final.
For their efforts, players and teams that excelled from the Vanguard Group comprising United Pension Trust, Vanguard Life Assurance, ICS Securities, Online Computer Solutions, City International Limited, Nkosuo Micro Finance Limited, Nationwide Mutual Health, Premium Reality, Health Net Medical Centre and M/G Insurance Brokers were decorated with glittering medals, trophies and special cash prizes.
Founder of the United Pension Trustees Limited Harold Awuah Darko Jnr revealed that besides playing it in honour of Nana Awuah-Darko Ampem, it formed part of his outfit’s decision to revive the sport in the country.
He expressed gross satisfaction about the large turn out and urged the youth to attach seriousness to the sport which dominated in the 70’s.
