The Director of the Electoral Commission in the Savelugu Constituency of the Northern Region, John Mensah, has indicated that the robbery that took place at their office immediately after the limited voters’ registration exercise, may not have been targeted at the Commission.
He also allayed fears that the stolen gadgets used for the registration exercise, would lead to the loss of collated data.
[contextly_sidebar id=”Z8MF9Y7L6kIxb5wq7Zre8S3fRZVgWNet”]Suspected robbers ransacked their office making away with some computers and other gadgets, but Mr. Mensah was quick to point out that documents from the just ended registration exercise were intact and would not affect the registrants in the just ended limited registration exercise.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, he said, “with regards to the registration, I don’t think it has any impact because all the registration kits, that one they are intact.”
Mr. Mensah further assured that all their information had been exported to servers in Accra and that no information was lost in the incident.
“With respect to the server, we have exported all the results to Accra so taking down the server is not going to affect anything with respect to the results we have acquired for the district.”
Mr. Mensah downplayed suggestions that the EC office may have been specifically targeted especially because the act took place right after the registration exercise. According to him, they share the same office with the Ghana Education Service (GES), which also had its computers and other gadgets stolen.
“I can’t say we were targeted because we are sharing the same building with the Ghana Education Service and they too had their computers stolen on that day… so I cannot say that they targeted he Electoral commission. I would say it was a theft case, it could be anything.”
He however said there was the need for the Commission to step up its security nationwide before, during and after the elections.
