Ghana to mark 15th anniversary of May 9 disaster today

The Minister of Youth and Sports Nii Lante Vanderpuye will today oversee a wreath laying ceremony at the Accra Sports Stadium to mark the 15th anniversary of the May 9 disaster.

A rival league match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko claimed the lives of 127 supporters following a disagreement over a refereeing decision.

To register their displeasure fans threw chairs,bottles of water and other missiles unto the pitch,this prompted the firing of tear gas by the police in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

In a frantic bid to head for the exit fans trampled over each other resulting in the death of 127 individuals and the injuring of many others.

Tagged Black Wednesday it represents the darkest day in Ghanaian football history. The ceremony will take place at the May 9 memorial and representatives of both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are scheduled to attend.

A number of stakeholders within the sports fraternity including the Referees Association of Ghana, Ghalca,the Ghana Football Association and a number of supporter groups will participate in a seminar dubbed “Rules of Soccer” with the aim to impart knowledge on what constitutes appropriate behaviour during matches and places that attract large crowds.
