As the Electoral Commission’s Limited Voters Registration exercise draws to a close today, some of its officials at the various registration centres have said they will not be able to register all persons by close of day.
Speaking to Citi News, a registration officer, Dominic Andoh at the Ayalolo registration centre in the Ashiedu Keteke electoral area, lamented that with the numbers they were seeing today, “we can’t register everybody, absolutely not… we have problems with light here so we may not be able to even take pictures when it gets dark.”
“We trying to do our best as electoral officers to register [as many as we can] for those we cannot capture we will talk to the political party agents and if there is anything else to do, it will have to come from the higher authorities,” he added.
Some political parties, students, individuals and CSOs have called on the EC to extend the time for the exercise but it said it is yet to take any such decision.
Party Agents Frustrating the Process
According to Mr. Andoh, various political party agents are frustrating the process by unnecessarily challenging some of the registrants.
“Some of them [party agents] challenge people and come back later to withdraw the challenges, these raise arguments and slow the process.”
He recommends that there should be some punitive measures put in place to check the practice where agents challenge people for the sake of it.
