The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana, is asking the Electoral Commission to provide two more registration centers on their campus before the exercise ends on Sunday, May 8.
The SRC argued that the additional centers will ease the pressure on the only centre on campus which is not registering enough students.
[contextly_sidebar id=”N23iBXOZ7HVX5pZ0S8Fk3Al1f3B2ZmDj”]Speaking at a press briefing, the SRC President, Davis Ohene Fobi, called for two extra registration centres at strategic points on the campus to widen the reach and register more eligible voters.
“We ask that as a matter of urgency, two extra registration centres be provided here in the university of Ghana main campus to ease the congestion at the only registration center at Legon hall.”
Fobi also expressed fears that thousands of students would be disenfranchised if nothing is done about their plea.
“We ask for extra registration center also because a simple calculation of the number of students registered in a day compared with the expected numbers to register indicates a huge deficit of over 80 percent eligible voters not being registered.”
Commission disenfranchising eligible students
The University Students Association of Ghana, (USAG) has accused the EC of essentially disenfranchising eligible students with its handling of the registration exercise on the various campuses.
They have also threatened to drag the EC to court if it does not extend the duration of the limited registration exercise to enable more students on university campuses across the country to register.
Their comments were echoed by the presidential running mate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who said more registration centers are required on the various campuses.
