Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), brewer of Club Premium Lager, the number one selling beer in Ghana employs over 1,000 permanent and short-term workers.

Accra Brewery Limited is therefore keen on creating a safe and stress free environment for its employees whom it considers its enduring advantage.

ABL on Thursday, 28th April 2016, joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Day for Safety & Health at work on the theme “Workplace Stress: a Collective Challenge” with an array of stress and environmental management awareness activities within the company.

The commemoration of World Day for Safety & Health at Work at ABL is the culmination of a month-long awareness creation campaign around workplace safety at the brewery. The campaign was to draw attention to the current global trends on work related stress and its impact on the workforce through the dissemination of safety videos, posters, and write-ups on stress management.

ABL has over the years intensified its safety education with numerous activities including the creation of monthly safety awareness themes with safety competitions, emergency evacuation drills, trainings of first aiders and fire fighters to improve on the company’s emergency response as well as evacuation procedures among employees, contractors and visitors.

Emmanuel Agyekum Site Services Manager, the lead contact responsible for safety within the brewery noted with delight the improvement in the safety culture amongst employees; decrease in unsafe acts and the appropriate wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which has resulted in the reduction of injuries reported on site in the past year compared to prior years.

He remarked “ABL has a moral and legal obligation to safeguard employees and visitors to its site against risks to health, safety or loss associated with our activities. Our focus on hazard identification and control as well as emergency response management has yielded significant results thereby reducing man hours lost to accidents on our premises. The commitment of our MD and other Heads of Department to safety issues of employees has also enhanced the campaign towards compliance with all safety procedures.

Anthony Grendon, MD of ABL, in his commemorative message to employees said “safety is non-negotiable and safety is everyone’s business. Stress at the workplace is a reality, hence it is important for one to understand how to deal with it effectively. There is no job that is too important and no service that is too urgent that we cannot take time to perform our work safely.”
