The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has condemned government’s decision to allow some private participation in the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), saying the company only needs efficient leadership to deliver better service.
Government had earlier indicated plans to offer the state-owned company on a concessionary deal to ensure greater efficiency.
[contextly_sidebar id=”VXoQeFG1cHXYv7VlMQ1z7L8sTgaFxRSj”]But President John Mahama at Sunday’s May Day celebration insisted that his government does not intend to privatize ECG.
According to President Mahama, government is instead leveraging on the private sector to reach out to more clients and also boost revenue collection.
Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy General Secretary of the CPP, Asani Tano, agreed with the President and said there was no basis for the sale of the company.
He stated that Ghanaians will benefit immensely if the state controls key institutions like ECG.
“We believe strongly that if the state leads in many of the pertinent industries like electricity, water and a whole lot of things, it will go a long way in helping the indigenes live a comfortable life.”
According to Mr. Tano, Ghanaians will go through severe hardship if the control of ECG is ceded to a private operator or foreign firm.
“The privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana or energy to any foreign company or any private company will go a long way to increase the hardship of the people of this country.”
Mr. Tano indicated that the fortunes of ECG and other state-owned companies would improve with better leadership and supervision.
“We only need to appoint honest, committed and dedicated people, which we have in this country, to man these areas with strict supervision and things will be better.”
