A member of the Convention People’s Party, CPP, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has condemned what he calls the craze for public holidays in Ghana.
Currently, about 13 public holidays are observed in Ghana under the Public Holidays Act 2001 (Act 601) which also allows the President of Ghana to declare other holidays as and when necessary.
Speaking to Citi News, the Nkrumaist said the practice is detrimental to productivity especially where holidays have to be pushed from a weekend to a working day.
“The day on which we celebrate the holiday should really be the holiday. What I don’t like is if it ends on a weekday or a Saturday it is pushed to a Monday. If it happens on Sunday, that is May Day. What is this colonial thing that says that if you have a holiday on a Saturday, Monday should be converted to a holiday? I think we should grow out of it and stop that.”
Professor Akosah was adding his voice to a number of concerns that had been raised by people about the increasing number of holidays in the country and its effect on the country’s productivity and revenue.
Ghana celebrated workers day on Sunday May 1, but the holiday was postponed to May 2, because of the weekend to enable workers around the country take a rest.
