The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has asked all political parties to tell Ghanaians what policies they will use to turn Ghana’s economic situation around, should they win the November 7 elections.
The General Secretary of the Congress, Kofi Asamoah, said this in his May Day address in Wa.
“We expect the competing parties and their presidential candidates to address important social and economic issues including the unbearable cost of living, the huge unemployment rates, poverty, housing, sanitation and transportation issues,” he said.
“They have to tell us how they are all going to take Ghana out of the failed IMF/World Bank sponsored policies. This opportunity should not be wasted by diverting attention to trivial issues. This opportunity should not be wasted by diverting attention to trivial issues.”
Kofi Asamoah also advised all political parties to watch their statements in the period leading to the elections.
“This year’s elections must not be about issues that divide us and undermine national unity and cohesion. The elections are not about tribes, neither are they a beauty contest. The parties must take note of that and refrain from unguarded statements that place no food on the table of the ordinary Ghanaian.”
President John Dramani Mahama was also in Wa for the May Day celebration and he also urged the Trade Union Congress to make sure it solves all problems that are rearing their heads on the labour front.
