President John Dramani Mahama has insisted that his government does not intend to privatize the country’s power distributor Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to him, what is happening is that government is instead leveraging on the private sector to reach out to more clients and also boost revenue collection.

Government agreement under the Millennium Challenge Compact is to leverage private sector participation at the client level to assist in resolving client complaints and revenue collection,” he added.
President Mahama, while speaking at the May Day celebrations in Wa in the Upper West Region, assured Ghanaians that the new reforms at the ECG will not result in retrenchment.
“There would be no worker retrenchment occurring as a result of this reform,” he said.
Millennium Challenge Compact
Government has been criticized over its decision to reform the ECG after it signed an agreement with the Millennium Challenge Account.
The reform is also targeted at enhancing technology and efficiency in power distribution to the ECG to help them become a stronger company able to meet the current and future needs of the power sector.
Currently over 40 companies comprising local and foreign, have expressed interest to partner government in transforming ECG.
