The parliamentary candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) for the Efutu constituency, Nana Ofori Owusu, has described the ongoing limited voter registration exercise as “useless” and a sheer waste of time and resources.
Nana Owusu made the comment on Citi FM’s political analysis show, The Big Issue on Saturday when the issue about the voter registration exercise was being discussed.
The Electoral Commission (EC) last Thursday begun a limited voter registration exercise to enable them capture new voters ahead of the November 7, general elections.
But according to the PPP Parliamentary candidate, the EC should not have wasted taxpayers money for the exercise.
In his opinion, the EC should have liaised with the National Identification Authority so that people can register as soon as they turn 18.

You don’t need to do this useless process at this time,” he said.
He added that “no political party is the birth and death registry but they are told to go and monitor the exercise and are expected to be able to look at people and say that they are not old enough. The EC reneges on its work and calls political parties to go and do some useless exercise when you don’t need anyone to validate your age when you go for a driver’s license.”
The EC expects to register about 1.2 million prospective voters in the ongoing registration exercise which is expected to end on May8, 2016.
