The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has condemned the practice where supporters of incumbent political parties openly display party paraphernalia at state events.
The Chairman of PPP, Nii Brew Hammond, has thus called on President John Mahama to discourage his party members from wearing party paraphernalia to official government gatherings as is being witnessed during his ‘Accounting to the people tour’.
[contextly_sidebar id=”QeYLOoHMzQKbP2RkAKSjnzDK9ODtKpCY”]According to Nii Brew Hammond, the best way to deal with the issue of abuse of incumbency is for leaders to exhibit some degree of integrity.
President Mahama has called for a debate on how to come out with rules and regulations to address the perceived abuse of incumbency over the years.
Speaking to Citi News, Nii Brew Hammond said incumbent governments should consider directing their party supporters to desist from showing up at state events in party colours.
The PPP Chairman stated that, “When you are holding a function like that, you may rule that your party members should not show up in party colors. They may show up in any attire but not party colours. They don’t have to be there in party colours to affirm their confidence in the President on a national tour,” he added.
Mr. Brew Hammond bemoaned the fact that this trend which does not seem to help in national unity, has become a normal practice at state events and is also deepening political polarization.
“If this continues, it will become an accepted standard. The next president will come and do all manner of things and call it a state event and bill it to the tax payers. We should have some integrity in ourselves and we should have some credibility.”
