Members of the Coalition of Unemployed Nurses and Midwives are asking government to compensate them for failing to employ them after completing school.
Speaking on the Point Blank segment on Eyewitness News, the President of the Coalition, Adams Masawudu, explained that they need to be compensated because they had been relying on loans for their upkeep.
[contextly_sidebar id=”vUu9ONlZUV295d4xUtPXjEwvdgcioE0u”]“We are looking at around 700 cedis per month and we want that amount of money to be paid to about 2,000 nurses who are taking loans and struggling to fend for themselves. Per the terms, government is supposed to employ us immediately after completing school since they have failed they should be ready to cater for my daily upkeep,” Adams Masawudu said.
We’re disappointed in gov’t
The unemployed nurses demonstrated on Wednesday in Accra over government’s failure to engage them, and have demanded their clearance by the Ministry of Finance to enable them to be posted.
Mr. Masawudu was however disappointed that government failed to delegate an official from the Flagstaff House to receive their petition.
“We could not get a presidential staffer or anybody from the President coming to take our petition so we were disappointed in the presidency.”
According to him, they have seen signs of some efforts being made to address their problem, but said he could not say whether that was in reaction to their demonstration or it was just a mere coincidence.
Demo to be replicated in other regions
He further revealed that the nurses intend to replicate the demonstrations in various regions if measures are not taken immediately to address their concerns.
