Tidal waves have displaced nearly 100 residents in the Ellembelle District of the Western region.
The waves, which started displacing residents in the late hours of Sunday, is also said to have carried away livestock and other belongings of residents.
[contextly_sidebar id=”LXqrZOXKIuWN5AK8ATiVw72PSpTSVTyC”]The worst affected community is Awoma where the River Ankobra joins the sea. The situation is compounded by River Ankobra, which is also overflowing its banks.
Assembly Member for the Asanta-Bobrama Ankobra electoral area, Paul Ekelaku Amoah, said support from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is urgently needed.
“Over 20 families made up of over 60 members including women and children have all been displaced. As I speak, the waves are still displacing people. We have in the meantime asked all the affected to join other members in areas where they have not been affected. We cannot provide all the support for these people. We need the support of NADMO and the government”.
When Citi News contacted the District Chief Executive for the Ellembelle District Daniel Eshun, he noted that a team has been deployed to all affected communities in the district to ascertain the extent of damage and to determine which immediate support they could offer.
Meanwhile Citi News understands that the District Assembly has in time past declared the Awoma community as an unsafe area for human habitation due to its proximity to the sea and the River Ankobra.
Community members however have argued that they could not move because they were left to bear the cost of relocation which many claim they could not afford.
Tidal waves displace homes in Fuveme
The Ellembele incident came barely hours after tidal waves at Fuveme in the Keta Municipality in the Volta Region compelled residents to flee from their homes.
