President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government would be expanding the Progressively Free SHS policy to cover boarding students in deprived districts.
He made this announcement as part of his three-day Volta Regional leg of his ‘Accounting to the People’ tour at the inauguration of the Nchumuruman Community Day Senior High School in Chinderi.
In his address at the inauguration, President Mahama announced his government’s decision to expand the Progressively Free SHS policy, which currently covers day students in selected schools, to boarding students in deprived districts.
“We intend to begin to expand this free senior high school programme to cover boarding students in deprived districts. Sometime before the start of the academic year in August or September, we will officially launch this programme. The Ministry of Education is currently doing all the ground work to make sure this programme takes off smoothly,” he added.
President Mahama described the community day schools as a means to ensure equity in the distribution of development in the educational sector.
“… this strengthens government’s resolve to continue with ongoing efforts to expand quality secondary education across the country.”
