UEW distance education graduates 1, 316 teachers

The University of Education Winneba (UEW), has graduated a total number 1,316 teachers as the first batch of the southern sector study centres, from its Centre for Distance Education of the Institute for Educational Development and Extension.

The certificates issued out comprises of 1,248 degrees and 68 diplomas.

Students from Sogakope, Winneba, Cape-Coast, Accra Academy and Accra ATTRACO centre, were conferred with degrees at the school’s 20th congregation ceremony which was held on Saturday.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Education Winneba, Professor Mawutor Kwesi Avoke, said the school is collaborating with the colleges of education in building the capacities of the staff of the colleges to get the requirement to teach in the tertiary institutions as they welcome the passage of the Colleges of Education Act.

“The University of Education Winneba welcomes the passage of the Colleges of Education Act which has upgraded all the teacher training colleges into Colleges of Education. UEW is passionate in ensuring improvement in the provision of quality education in Ghana and is also committed to working with the Colleges of Education in Ghana to upgrade their status to tertiary level.”

Professor Avoke said the school has also designed a comprehensive mentorship programme for the Colleges.

The Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Dr. Emmanuel Kennet Andoh, challenged the grandaunts to be professional educators and agents of change and development.

“Now that you have successfully acquired knowledge and higher education, it is time to use whatever you have learnt here over the years to serve mankind, your nation and humanity. That should be your personal commitment from now on and I sincerely hope that this country will give each one of you the opportunity to give his or her very best and utmost service.
