The Chief of Navio at Paga in the Upper East Region narrowly escaped death on Thursday, after the youth of the town attacked his palace and threatened to end his life.

Although they were unsuccessful because the chief, Naviopio Adam Kwarasei II, fled for his life, reports indicate that the youth burnt two houses in the palace.

Confirming the attack to Citi News, the Paga District Police Commander, DSP Isaac Kojo Forson said the incident happened around 1pm on Thursday.

Angry youth attack Navio palace

“Yesterday [Thursday] in the afternoon, around 1:30pm, we received a distress call from a town called Navio and from an unknown person…who told me a group of people who are all youth came from Paga and Shaka and they were attacking the chief’s palace, burning the house and causing damage to property. He again told me that the group wanted to kill the chief.”

Police, fire service to the rescue

The Commander said Police were quickly dispatched to the place to restore calm and upon arriving at the scene “we were informed that the youth of Paga and Shaka surrounded the palace wanting to kill the chief so the chief with support from the elders run away. He went on a motorbike.”

DSP Forson noted that they realized that some of the rooms in the Palace had been set ablaze so they quickly informed the fire service team in the area who came in to quench the fire.

“So far, two rooms were burnt and the chief is nowhere to be found but the people are telling the Police that the chief is fine,” he added.

Six people arrested

Although the cause of the attack is not yet known, the Police commander noted that they have so far arrested six people in connection with the attack and will process them for court soon.

“Police have been able to arrest six persons. We have screened them and we are about to process them for court. For now, my CID men are there trying to take their statements. We will have time to interrogate them before taking them to court,” he added.

Press conference

Citi News understands that the elders of the town will later today [Friday] hold a press conference over the issue.
