Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has accused the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) of squandering money meant for the Keta Sea Defencee project as a counter to President Mahama’s claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did nothing substantive for the Volta Region.
President Mahama recently accused the NPP of sidelining the Volta Region as far as infrastructural development was concerned.
The President strongly defended the record of the NDC in the Volta Region, saying that the party was responsible for all the massive projects that the region has seen since the inception of the fourth republic.
But in his defense of the NPP’s record in the Volta Region, former president Kufuor accused the NDC of squandering money meant for the Keta Sea Defense Project which stood at almost $100 million in three phases.
“They claim we did nothing in the Volta Region. Let’s start from Keta. The money they acquired for the sea defence wall, they squandered it. It was during my tenure that we constructed the wall.”
Work on the final phase of the sea defence project at Atorkor-Dzita-Anyanui in the Keta municipality which cost US$54 million, was reported to have been completed in 2014.
But reports indicated that the only basic school in Dzita has lost three classrooms to the sea and the Assembly Member for the area, Mr Samuel Brass Dedzo, was angered by the fact that almost all official communication on the sea defence project referred to the community as being a beneficiary of the project when the sea was wreaking havoc.
Some other communities like Kporkporgbor, Fuveme, Havedzi and Xorvi in the Keta municipality also reportedly face critical sea erosion if nothing is done to curtail the advancing tidal waves that are eating away the land and causing destruction in those communities.
Mr. Kufour, who was speaking at his residence in Accra when the newly elected NPP MP for Abuakwa North, Gifty Twum Ampofo, paid a courtesy call on him, also drew attention to the fact his government constructed the Ho Polytechnic and roads from Nkonya through to Dambai.
“Ho Polytechnic was built by us. Even the University of Ghana envies this school. Go to Nkonya through to Dambai. We constructed all those roads in the first term of the NPP.”
