The Tampulma ethnic group in the North Gonja District of the Northern Region, have expressed concern about the invasion of their communities by nomadic Fulani Herdsmen.
They suspect the Nomads migrated from Agogo and other parts of the country to settle on their farmlands.
In February, a special joint task-force of military and Police personnel was dispatched to Agogo to evict some violent Fulani herdsmen. It is however unclear whether those evicted may have relocated to the North Gonja District.
There have also been clashes between Fulani herdsmen and local farmers in the Afram Plains area and other parts of the Eastern Region.
The clashes stemmed from accusations by local farmers that their farms were being destroyed by the cattle belonging to the Fulani herdsmen, who they also accused of human rights abuses such as rape.
The protracted conflict in some cases resulted in violent clashes and death.
Speaking to Citi News, the spokesperson for the Tampulma ethnic group Ahmadu Latif, described the activities of the Fulani herdsmen as a threat to their livelihood.
“Of late there have been some challenges and that include the activities of Fulani herdsmen and illegal logging in the Tampulna area. This we consider as a threat to the livelihood of the people and the fact that they depend on that for their survival.”
The Tampulma spokesperson further complained the Fulani activities were also destroying their farms and appealed to authorities to intervene in the matter.
“Some Fulani herdsmen have destroyed some native Tampulma farms. We are appealing to all institutions that matter to halt the destruction and bring the perpetrators to book.”
