President John Mahama has urged Ghanaians to stay united in everything they do before, during and after this year’s elections.
The President was speaking during a Muslim vigil known as the Maulid in Kumasi.
[contextly_sidebar id=”TRMtIqrFWLISjQlTFkYr9Ggvx3eR0vkR”]“We must ensure that we remain a nation that is united. Do not allow anyone to exploit cracks that emanate from disagreements of any form or shape, whether ethnic, religious or political,” Mr. Mahama said.
He pointed out that “these fundamentalists do not discriminate in their choice of victims. They kill children, women and men; young and old; and they attack people of all religious persuasions, be they Muslims or non-Muslims, Christians or people of other faiths.”
“I wish to assure you that our security agencies are firm and are doing all that is possible to keep us safe. We must all support them to be able to realize this objective.”
Ghana’s peace enviable
President Mahama at the event also said Ghana has an enviable global recognition because of the peace it enjoys.
He said at a time when terrorism is on the rise, there is peaceful co-existence among the religious groups in the country.
President Mahama thus applauded the Muslim community and other religious groups for ensuring that peace prevails in the country adding that “Ghana has an enviable global recognition [and it] is a place where peaceful co-existence thrives between Muslims, Christians and people of other religion.”
“This case of harmony has helped us keep the peace and forged ahead with the needed development for our people and we must maintain it… This year, the call is even more important especially following the surge in global terrorist activities”.
Mawlid is the observance of the birthday of the Islamic Prophet, Muhammad, which is celebrated often on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-awwal, the third month on the Islamic calendar.
The 12th Day of Rabi’ al-awwall is the most popular date from a list of many dates that are reported as the birth date. –
