The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), says its Greater Accra Regional office registered over one million new subscribers onto the scheme last year.
The authority attributed the increase in numbers to the introduction of the Biometric Membership System and the extension of their working hours.
[contextly_sidebar id=”47tflNuYRyIwDq2UpneBuHovxtZKn2ST”]The Greater Accra Regional Director of the NHIA, Lawrence Amartey, revealed this at a regional annual performance review meeting in Accra on Wednesday.
According to him, their target for the Greater Accra Region was 1.2 million new members, but they exceeded their targets.
“Our target for the year was almost 1.2 million; but we were able to exceed it by 20 percent, that is 1.4 million,” Mr Amartey said.
Mr. Amartey noted that an area like Weija exceeded their target by 89 percent, Osu Klottey exceeded by 30 percent and Labadi exceeded their target by 33 percent.
The Greater Accra Regional Director attributed this boost to strategic targeting of certain communities.
“They were able to identify and they were able to enter the communities and make a lot more registrations.”
NHIA likely to increase premiums
NHIA has said it is likely to increase the premium of subscribers due to the current economic situation.
Recently, the NHIA increased the premium it pays to its service providers. The head of the NHIA, Nathaniel Otoo, conceded that it has become necessary for the authority to review its prices.
He however says a decision on the percentage increase is yet to be taken.
