Over 70 Ghanaians, who set off on Monday March 7, for a 7-day trip that gave them a rare opportunity to experience Ghana amidst amusement on Citi FM’s Heritage Caravan, have arrived safely in Accra.
It was a journey to behold Ghana’s fascinating heritage and rich cultural diversity, in over seven out of the ten regions.
After setting off from the national capital on March 7, the over 70 expectant crew on-board the Heritage Caravan, journeyed to the famous Adaklu Mountain situated 12 km from Ho in the Volta Region.
It is one of the highest in Ghana and is about 600m above sea level, and surrounded by 9 villages.
On the same day, the caravan drove through Somanya, the hilly town of Adukrom, the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, Nkawkaw, and then to New Aberim to pass the night there.
The crew set off the next day from New Aberim, driving through about 10 villages to Juaso and then to Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.
In Kumasi, members of the caravan visited the Rattry Park and relived the rich Ashanti culture and History at the seat of the King of the Ashanti People, Manhyia Palace.
After passing the night in Kumasi, the caravan on the next day drove through major towns like Offinso, Afrancho, Akumadan, Techiman and Kintampo to the Northern Regional capital Tamale.
The crew continued through the savannah low lands of the north and came to the popular town, Buipe, where they crossed the Black Volta.
The next major town was Yapei, where the Tamale Port is located and also did our second crossing of the White Volta.
The experience in Tamale was remarkable and unforgettable as the crew was treated to rich cultural display organised and hosted by the Chief of Tamale, Naa Dakpemah Alhassan Dawuni.
The team’s next stop was the Boabeng Fiema Monkey in the Nkoranza North District of the Brong Ahafo Region.
Here, the travellers had the rare opportunity of feeding some of the over 2,000 Mona and Colobus monkeys at the sanctuary in the dense tropical forest of Boabeng and Fiema.
After passing the night in Sunyani, the Brong Regional capital, the Caravan proceeded to Takoradi the Western Regional Capital on Friday.
It drove through Kumasi to Obuasi and then to the over 12 Assin towns, and joined the main Accra-Takoradi road at Yamoransa.
After passing the night in Takoradi, members of the caravan had another wonderful experience at Nzulezu, the village on stilt, 90km west of Takoradi.
The spectacular scenery of the 400-year old stilt propped water settlement, built on Lake Tadane, stands out as a magnificent interplay between man and his environment. A tour guide tells us a history of the village.
The climax of the 7 day tour, took us to one of the UNSECO Heritage sites in Ghana, the Elmina Castle.
The mood was sober as the guide showed the team around the castle.
The team members have commended Citi FM for the initiative describing it as an eye opener.
The Heritage Caravan, the first of its kind, forms part of the station’s Heritage Month initiative, held annually in Ghana’s birth month, March.
The Citi Heritage Caravan was powered by Sasso, Top Oil, Jovargo and Colgate.
