From the Ashanti Region, Lauretta Tima reports that the registration started at 9am.

She revealed that “the exercise is open to all eligible voters”

She indicated that about 18 people have so far registration.

The pilot registration, which will take place in selected polling stations in all 10 regions, it to allow the EC to test its upgraded Biometric Registration Kits (BVR Kits) for the impending limited voter registration and subsequent registration exercises.

The exercise which started at 9.00am is expected to end at 4.00pm.

EC defends upgraded biometric registration device

The EC earlier defended its decision to upgrade the software that runs the biometric registration devices, saying the move will among other things help detect the identity cards used for the registration.

Old software couldn’t capture some details

It further explained that it had to upgrade the software because the old one could not capture some details.

“When we talk about upgrade, we are talking about the upgrade of the software for the biometric registration. In the 2012/2014 revision of the voters register, there were some information that we could not capture on the database,” the acting Director of Public Relations at the EC, Christian Owusu Parry said.

He explained that the old software made it difficult to track information.

“Now we are trying to introduce a software that will capture every form of identification that the person actually brought to the polling station for the registration. In the 2012/2014 revision of the voters register, there were some information that we could not capture on the database.”
