The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin has confirmed the arrest of an alleged British drug lord, said to be hiding from UK security authorities for years, in Ghana.
The UK media reported that the alleged drug baron, David McDermott has been on the run for about three years and claim he is even married to the daughter of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah.
David McDermott, of Ormskirk, West Lancashire, was being hunted by the National Crime Agency and was finally arrested on Friday Morning in an international sting operation at his home in the affluent Burma Hills in Accra this week.
The British High Commissioner to Ghana, commended the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for the role they played in arresting McDermott.
Citi News investigations have also revealed that extradition process to get McDermott back to the UK for trial is likely to start on Monday.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) on its official website said; “McDermott is suspected of being a member of a Liverpool-based organised crime group involved in a conspiracy to import and supply cocaine which was seized from a container of frozen Argentinian beef in May 2013 at Tilbury Docks. He is also wanted for conspiracy to blackmail.”
[contextly_sidebar id=”f7X7imXR22ohZ1smT2gieBbRzvvrXH4f”]According to Dave Allen, the Head of the NCA’s International Crime Bureau, 42 year old McDermott’s arrest was a result of close collaboration the Ghanaian authorities, “and shows our determination and success in tracking down fugitives, however far they run in an attempt to evade capture.”
“McDermott was the last man outstanding in a plot to smuggle a huge quantity of cocaine which would have ended up on the streets of Merseyside. He will now be returned to the UK to stand trial,” he added.
