The Metropolitan Chief Executive for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Kojo Bonsu has revealed that the phase one of the Kumasi Kejetia-Central market reconstruction project is about 60% complete.
Mr. Bonsu said this when he inspected the project with market queens from the Kumasi Central market.
“We are very close; it looks like 60% of the work is done now,” headded.
According to the mayor, bringing the market women to the site is to enable them be abreast with the state of the project.
“The traders are our partners, and if they are our partners, we have to let them know and see what we’re doing, because we know people are bickering, people are saying they don’t know all that is going on here. So our intention is to let our partners who are the market women and traders to come here and see all that is going on,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the market queens could not hide their joy when they visited the site and they were surprised at the work done by the contractor, Contracta Engenhiara Limited.
The reconstruction of the Kumasi Kejetia-Central Market has in the past few months experienced some setbacks.
Some disgruntled traders at the central market had resisted moves to relocate them to pave way for the commencement of the ultra-modern market centre.
They had also dragged the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to court over the issue.
However, all issues between the drivers, traders at the Market and authorities of KMA have been resolved.
Phase One of the Kejetia-Central market project comprises construction work in the area which is expected to be done within 24 months at the cost of $198 million, while the remaining $100 million will be expended on the second and third phases, which would focus on the redevelopment of the Kumasi Central Market.
A biometric exercise is currently ongoing to register traders of the Kumasi central market to enable them have secured shops when phase One of the project is completed.
